2022 Commonwealth Games

21 July 2022

The 2022 Commonwealth Games will be taking place in Birmingham and across the West Midlands from 28 July – 8 August

What are the Commonwealth Games?

The Commonwealth Games is an international multi-sport event involving athletes from the Commonwealth of Nations, which includes Canada. The Games were first held in 1930 and has been quadrennial (except during the Second World War) since then.

The previous Commonwealth Games were held in Australia and this time they will be held in the English city of Birmingham. Over 12 days, 4,500 athletes from 72 countries will compete across 15 competition venues, several of which will be on the campuses of UK universities.

Which UK Universities will be involved with the Games?

The University of Birmingham is an Official Partner of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games and is playing a key role in delivering an outstanding international sporting event that will focus the eyes of the world on Birmingham as well as the university's world-leading reputation for excellence.

The University of Birmingham is the:

  • Official host of hockey and squash
  • Official host of the largest athletes’ village
  • Official training venue for Swimming and Athletics
  • Official catering provider for athletes, spectators, Games family and workforce

The university also has over 100 staff and students volunteering for the Games (and counting) and over 450 students employed on campus supporting the Games.

Another partner of the games is the Coventry-based University of Warwick which will be hosting one of the athletes’ villages, with close to 2,000 competitors making use of their campus facilities. As well as housing participants, Coventry is also set to host the competition, with judo, rugby sevens and wrestling set to be held at the Coventry Arena
