The University of Manchester is located in the north of England and is one of the largest universities in the UK, with approximately 41,000 students, including over 11,000 international students from more than 160 countries. It employs around 12,000 staff members and is known for its academic and research excellence as a member of the prestigious Russell Group of leading UK universities.

The University has a distinguished history of innovation and impact, boasting 25 Nobel Prize winners among its current and former staff and students. These include ten in physics, nine in chemistry, three in physiology/medicine, and three in economics. The University is ranked 34th in the QS World University Rankings 2025 and 52nd in the Academic Ranking of World Universities 2024 (Shanghai Jiao Tong).

In the most recent Quality Assurance Agency review, the University received high praise, with confidence placed in the quality of its learning opportunities and student experience. The University is also a leader in employability, with 94% of its recent graduates entering employment or further study, and has been recognised as the most targeted university by top UK graduate recruiters (High Fliers Research 2023).

The University of Manchester's position as a research powerhouse was confirmed in the 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF) results. With 93% of the University’s research activity assessed as ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent', it ranked 10th in grade point average (an improvement from 19th in the previous exercise, REF 2014).
