LLB (2 Year) in the UK

Two Year LLB in the UK

Two Year LLB in the UK

Study a 2 year Bachelor of Laws (LLB) in the UK

Students with a first degree in any subject who wish to convert to law can study a two-year LLB/JD in the UK, known as Graduate Entry Law, Senior Status Law, or an Accelerated LLB. The two-year LLB covers the core modules and foundations of Law, generally allowing students to choose elective modules in the second year. A UK LLB degree is the equivalent of an American/Canadian Juris Doctor (JD) degree.

Law Accreditation

In order to practise law upon returning to Canada, students with LLB degrees from overseas will need to assess their qualifications with the National Committee on Accreditation (the NCA).

The NCA will assess the qualification you have earned outside of Canada and will decide if you will be admitted to a common-law bar in Canada. Accreditation will depend on your educational and professional background.

In order to obtain an NCA Certificate of Qualification, you will likely be required to sit further tests upon your return to Canada.

Read our Law Accreditation page to learn more about returning to Canada with a UK law degree.

Law JD Pathway LLB

Some UK universities now offer Canadian Law specialized courses, giving UK Law students a headstart in their preparation for the NCA exams, part of the process of returning to Canada to practice Law. Recognized in England, Wales AND Canada, this degree is an excellent foundation, providing students with the opportunity to pursue a legal career in any of these countries.

Studying the Law JD Pathway LLB will not exempt you from having to take an NCA examination upon returning to Canada, should you wish to practice law in Canada, but will prepare you for the NCA Process, making it easier for you to become a certified lawyer in Canada. If you are interested in learning about which UK law schools offer this Law JD Pathway contact an SI-UK consultant who will be pleased to help you through the application process.

LLB Career Prospects

Graduates from an LLB/JD course in the UK will be prepared to enter legal careers such as becoming a solicitor or barrister, but will also gain skills to enter a wide range of professions such as business, criminology and academia. After an LLB, study the Legal Practice Course (LPC) to become a solicitor, or the Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC) to become a barrister. Universities have strong links with local and national law firms and ensure students have the opportunities to network with potential employers.

Canadian students wishing to practice law in Canada after studying an LLB in the UK must complete a Certificate of Qualification comprising courses on Canadian Law Content. Alternatively, studying an LLM, Master of Laws, can provide exemption whilst also allowing students to specialize in a particular area of law.
